We all have regrets. We all have hopes and dreams. For me, it’s important to focus on a bright future ahead, not bad things in our past. I tried to convey that in this song.
(verse)
She was looking back on past regrets
A long time ago, but she can’t forget
Mistakes of youth still keep her up and night
The time she chased a good man away
Then found a bad one to take his place
And she wonders if she’ll ever get it right
She just might
(Chorus)
‘Cause the past ain’t nothin’ but a rear-view image
And the future’s comin’ ‘head a mile a minute
You’ll be there ‘fore you know it
Not even realize that you’re growin’
The missteps we take help to keep us straight
And every single pain is just a chance to change
Every bit of darkness will soon fill up with light…
And regrets are just the building blocks of life
(verse)
He was lost in a memory, four shots in
Held a good job and his girl loved him
And he still rues the day he threw it all away
Thinks what he did is now a ghost that haunts
Works to hold him back as it laughs and taunts
And he swears he’ll never reach those better days
Well, just wait
(Chorus)
(Bridge)
Ain’t none of us did a thing
That we wouldn’t love to take back
So just stay focused on the race
And you’ll keep your life on track
(Chorus)
I’ll Bring a Mirror: I wrote this song about a friend who was frightened of getting older. The goal was to let her know that she was still beautiful – something a lot of us need to hear as we age.
(verse)
Well, I was rackin’ my brain, ’bout how to show my love
To a girl who owns the world
Maybe chocolates and cards, and rubies and gold
Or the rarest string of pearls
But, hell, I ain’t got the kinda money for that
It’s just me, my heartbeat, and my song pad
So when that special day comes, I know what to do
I’m gonna sit right down, and show you the truth
(Chorus)
I’ll bring a mirror on your birthday
To show you proof that you don’t age
That smile, those eyes, like an angel’s face
Girl, I swear, you’re beautiful
Ignore those candles on your cake
Your kind of perfect just don’t fade
You’re prettier now, is the only change
And to prove it to you
I’ll bring a mirror on your birthday
(verse)
I know a humble old boy, from the country like me
Ain’t got a shot to impress you much
But if love could be felt from the tip of a finger
I’d blow up the sun with my touch
And maybe you have a taste for material things
And wouldn’t be happy with what I could bring
But I know deep on down, that you’d love it too
If you saw yourself, the way that I do
(Chorus x2)
